Abstract

This edition of the book in fact sees the first chapter almost completely rewritten, even through the headings remain essentially the same. Pasts of the chapter had been written in so concise a manner that it became tough -going for both teachers and students. So what I did was to substantially modify it and add more substance to it. Most of the chapters have been revised, altered and augmented with more materials and hopefully may become more readable. In prepering this edition, it is mya sincere hope that the book has managed to acquire some sort of coherence and consistency. The realization that modality can provide an exciting dimension to the issue of sentence and utterance meaning led to the addition of a new chapter “Modality” to the layout of the book.
