More than a native speaker: An introduction to teaching english abroad
This revised edition includes an expanded discussion of student-directed language learning, workbook activities for volunteer teachers enrolled in courses or studying the book individually, and a full array of culture-based discussion topics for use as supplementary activities or core material for an English course.

The book includes 16 chapters:
+ Chapters 1-6 cover issues of classroom survival: basic principles of language learning and teaching and course and lesson planning.
+ Chapters 7-14 discuss the language skills of listening, speaking, reading, writing, vocabulary, and grammar; the role of culture in language teaching; and some of the problems that recur in EFL classrooms. Chapter 15 addresses adaptation to life in the host country.
+ Chapter 16 suggests paths for volunteers who become interested in being professional language teachers. This book also includes useful appendices with a starter kit for course planning, culture-topic activity ideas for oral skills classes, and print and Internet resources for teachers and students.
Following an introduction, this book is divided into three parts.
+ Part I, Preparing to Teach, presents: (1) Principles of Language Learning and the Role of the Teacher; (2) Getting the Lay of the Land; (3) Planning Your Course; (4) Evaluation, Backwash, and Grading; (5) Lesson Planning and Classroom Survival; and (6) Putting It All Together: Sample Course Plans.
+ Part II, Aspects of English Teaching, continues with: (7) Listening: Putting the Horse before the Cart; (8) Speaking: A Linguistic Juggling Act; (9) Reading and Decoding; (10) Writing: Keeping Your Head above Water; (11) Vocabulary: Students in Charge; (12) Grammar: Finding a Balance; (13) Teaching Culture; and (14) A Troubleshooter's Guide to the Classroom.
+ Part III: Living Abroad, concludes with: (15) Adapting to Your Host Culture; and, (16) Afterword: On Becoming a Professional. Appended are: (1) The Goals Menu: A Starter Kit for Course Planning; (2) Culture-Topic Activity Ideas for Oral Skills Classes; (3) Books for Further Reading and, (4) Internet Resources for Teachers and Learners.
