Một tác phẩm kinh điển và có ảnh hưởng đã đặt nền tảng lý thuyết cho lý thuyết thông tin và là một văn bản kịp thời cho các nhà lý thuyết và thực hành thông tin đương đại. Với cuốn sách có ảnh hưởng Cybernetics, xuất bản lần đầu năm 1948, Norbert Wiener đã đặt nền tảng lý thuyết cho lĩnh vực đa ngành của cybernetics, nghiên cứu về việc kiểm soát luồng thông tin trong các hệ thống có vòng phản hồi, có thể là sinh học, cơ học, nhận thức hoặc xã hội.
